Attendees Beat Man to Death Outside Birmingham mosque

A MAN who suffered a serious head injury after being assaulted outside a Birmingham mosque has died in hospital.

The 21-year-old victim, who has not been named, was allegedly attacked in front of horrified worshipers in Small Heath on Friday.

He was discovered with a serious head injury near the Noor-ul-Uloom mosque, at the junction of Somerville Road and St Oswalds Road.

A family friend said he died yesterday afternoon at Heartlands Hospital.

He added: He was in a very bad way over the weekend and there was talk of switching off the life support machine on Sunday but he seemed to be improving.

The family are naturally devastated and making funeral arrangements.

One eyewitness to the alleged attack said: "It was just after Friday prayers so the mosque was packed with worshippers.

"There were women and kids stood outside watching all this and crying. You could hear the victim screaming out in pain."

A 15-year-old schoolboy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Birmingham Youth Court on Tuesday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was remanded in custody.

He appeared again yesterday for a bail hearing, which was refused. He was remanded into a young offenders institute until June 13.

Two other men arrested on Friday night aged 42 and 20 years old and also from Small Heath have both been released on police bail until a date in July.

A forensic post-mortem will be carried out today.

West Midlands Police are asking witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Detective Inspector Stuart Kidd said: "We are making a number of inquiries to find exactly what happened on Friday afternoon.

"We know many people were in the area and we urge them to come forward and assist us with our inquiry.

"Local officers are continuing to patrol the area to speak to local people and offer reassurance to the community."
