'Salafists' held over plot to kill German far-right activist

Police in Germany said on Wednesday they had arrested four men with links to an ultra-conservative Muslim group on suspicion of planning the murder of a politician from a small far-right party.

"The men, who were part of the Salafist scene, were thought to be planning the assassination of a politician from the Pro NRW party," said police in the western city of Essen.

Authorities searched two premises in Essen and in Bonn where they discovered "a firearm and material that could be used to make explosives," according to the statement.

Sources close to the investigation confirmed to AFP that the alleged target was Markus Beisicht, the head of the "Pro NRW" party, which has been involved in violent clashes with Salafists in the past year.
