Egypt's ruling party is paying gangs of thugs to sexually assault women protesting in Cairo's Tahrir Square against President Mohamed Morsi, activists said.

They also said the Muslim Brotherhood is paying gangs to beat up men who are taking part in the latest round of protests, which followed a decree by President Morsi to give himself sweeping new powers.

It comes as the Muslim Brotherhood co-ordinated a demonstration today in support of President Mohamed Morsi, who is rushing through a constitution to try to defuse opposition fury over his newly expanded powers.

Just 24 hours earlier around 200,000 people gathered in Tahrir Square, the heart of last year's revolution which toppled President Hosni Mubarak, yesterday to protest against a new draft constitution.

Large marches from around Cairo flowed into the square, chanting 'Constitution: Void!' and The people want to bring down the regime.'

But amid the calls for democracy a sinister threat has emerged.

Magda Adly, the director of the Nadeem Centre for Human Rights, said that under Mubarak, the Government paid thugs to beat male protestors and sexually assault women.

'This is still happening now,' she told The Times. 'I believe thugs are being paid money to do this ... the Muslim Brotherhood have the same political approaches as Mubarak,' she said.

Work set to start ‘soon’ on Blackburn's £1m Islamic centre

BUILDING work on a major open-to-all Islamic community centre in Blackburn is to begin ‘as soon as possible’.

The Naqshbandiyya Aslamiyya Spiritual Centre will be erected on vacant land at the corner of Pringle Street and Whittendale Crescent, Queen’s Park.

The 1,500 sq ft hall will cost £1 million, to be funded by the centre’s treasury and the community.

Blackburn with Darwen planning committee granted permission for the build which will allow more room for the growing numbers of worshippers at the mosque and attendants from the wider community.

The building will provide a space for quiet reflection, meditation and prayer and is hoped to house non-spiritual services to the borough such as work with young people, young offenders and disability groups.

Riaz Ahmad, centre chairman, said: “This is going to be a centre of spiritual excellence. Whether he is a Muslim or a non-Muslim, he is invited to learn about Islam here. We already have a very successful relationship working with both communities.”

The council received no objections to the project, although it was referred to the planning committee because it is of a ‘sensitive nature’.

Queen’s Park councillor, deputy mayor and Council of Mosques chairman Salim Mulla said: “I’m glad it’s gone through, it’s a centre that serves local Muslims well and we hope it will now include the wider community.”

Concerns about possible vandalism of the exterior led to suggestions of preventative measures such as anti-vandal paint and a protruding roof line.

However, Coun Mulla believes the owner and residents need not worry. He said: “There used to be a problem with vandalism in this particular area, but now this is not the case, crime in the area is down.”

The building will include energy-saving solar panels and parking spaces for 22 cars, including four for disabled motorists and, eight motorbikes, and four bicycles.

Bulgarian Radical Islam Trial Continues amid Renewed Protests

The trial against 13 Bulgarian Muslim religious leaders for preaching radical Islam continues Wednesday at the Pazardzhik District Court.



The Wednesday hearing is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and is expected to be accompanied by a protest rally scheduled by nationalist party VMRO-BND.

The demonstration is to start at 8:30 in front of the Pazardzhik Municipality and end opposite the Courthouse in the southern Bulgarian city.

The rally protests the alleged pressure exercised by men in black robes and burqa-clad women standing outside the court.

The demonstration expects support from a number of other nationalist organizations.

Local police plan to implement enhanced security measures and seal off the area, according to reports of the Interior Ministry, as cited by Darik radio.

The previous court hearing in end-October was accompanied by a rally attended by over 500 people, who demanded that the court be provided a pressure-free environment.

Parallel protests were staged by marginal nationalist parties Ataka and National Front for Salvation of Bulgaria.

All court hearings of the trial have been accompanied by silent demonstrations of Muslims, except for the last one, when the Muslim protesters dispersed due to the counter-protest.

During Wednesday's court hearing, three confidential witnesses codenamed 002, 004, and 005, will testify.

The Pazardzhik-based court has already examined 28 non-confidential witnesses and one protected witness.

The trial against the 13 members of the Al Waqf-Al Islami organization's local branch was launched on September 18.

The suspects have been charged with preaching an undemocratic ideology and seeking to impose Sharia law, with leading and participating in an unregistered religious entity preaching an undemocratic ideology and with preaching religious intolerance.

According to the indictment, the defendants built their belief systems in line with elements of Salafism, which they presented in Bulgaria in a radical version in the period March 2008 – October 6, 2010.

All suspects have pleaded not guilty.

D-Day looms for decision over socalled mega mosque in West Ham

D-Day is looming for plans by a Muslim movement to build a socalled mega-mosque in West Ham holding more than 9,000 worshippers.

 It is believed Newham council officers will recommend that councillors reject the controversial proposals for the Riverine Centre, also known as Abbey Mills Mosque, put forward by Tabilighi Jamaat.

The plans to erect the complex, which at 29,227 square metres is more than three times the floorspace of St Paul’s Cathedral, are due to be heard by Strategic Development Committee at Newham Council on Wednesday of next week (December 5). A report prepared for the meeting is expected to appear on the council’s online meeting calendar this evening.

The development includes a segregated space for nearly 2,000 women, a library, dining hall, visitors centre, eight flats for imams and guests, along with tennis pitches, a garden, and a riverside walk along Abbey Creek. Around 264 parking spaces would be provided.

The former industrial land at the end of Canning Road is one of ten sites listed for strategic development by Newham Council. The council’s core strategy set out plans for developments on the site to create a new town centre for mixed use around West Ham Station.

It states that any faith must not dominate the use or scale of the 6.3 hectare site overlooking the historic Abbey Mills pumping station and Canary Wharf.

The council’s core strategy also states that the site should provide a mix of residential and retail uses.

Previous plans for a mosque on the site included retail units but mosque trustees said these were dropped following consultation with the Muslim community.

Around 3,000 worshippers a week currently use facilities at the site, which has around 300 car parking spaces.

The meeting will be held at the Main Hall at the Old Town Hall in Stratford.

 DISAFFECTED Muslims are preparing to launch a petition to topple the high-flying businessman leading the bid for a Purley mosque if the site in question is refused on appeal.

A decision on whether to grant permission for an Islamic centre in Russell Hill Place is due in the next few weeks after charity Purley Islamic Community Centre (PICC) lodged an appeal with the planning inspectorate.

But the bid has been thrown into disarray with some of PICC's own members contacting the inspectorate demanding it be refused, the Advertiser has learned.

This, they say, is because the planning application for the mosque has been inaccurate from the outset.

After discovering the dissent, Monir Mohammed, trustee of PICC, circulated the names of the objectors in an e-mail to members of the Muslim community.

However, one of the recipients, who forwarded the e-mail to the Advertiser, said about "95 per cent" of those who donated money towards PICC's almost £200,000 pot are against the Russell Hill Place site.

"The site is not suitable because it is not big enough," they said.

"There are about 300 Muslim families in Purley, which make up about 1,000 people, and it only stated it would need to serve about 150 in the planning proposal.

Converting Denmark Into a Muslim Country

Muslim immigrants in a town near Copenhagen have forced the cancellation of traditional Christmas displays this year even while spending lavishly on the Islamic Eid celebration marking the end of Ramadan.

The controversy has escalated into an angry nationwide debate over the role of Islam in post-Christian Denmark, where a burgeoning Muslim population is becoming increasingly assertive in imposing its will on a wide range of social and civic issues.

The latest dust-up involves the Egedalsvænget housing complex in Kokkedal, a town situated some 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Copenhagen where Arab and Turkish immigrants now comprise more than half the total population.

At a recent meeting of the Egedalsvænget tenants' association, the Muslim majority on the Board of Directors refused to authorize spending 7,000 Danish kroner ($1,200) for the community's annual Christmas event.

The vote came shortly after the same Board of Directors authorized spending 60,000 kroner ($10,000) on a large communal celebration of the Muslim holiday Eid. Five out of nine of the board members are Muslims.

A Muslim member of the board, Ismail Mestasi, defended the decision to cancel the Christmas tree and party, arguing that no one had offered to organize the celebration. "No one wanted to take on the responsibility. A vote was taken and it ended as it ended. I don't celebrate Christmas, but I was asked to get the tree. And I didn't want to." But a non-Muslim board member, Karin Leegaard Hansen, refuted him, saying that she herself had offered to take on the responsibility, but that she was overruled by the Muslim board members.

The dispute, which is the latest in an ever-growing list of Muslim-related controversies in Denmark, was first reported by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) on November 7. Since then, the issue has snowballed into a national scandal and has become a key topic for public debate in the Danish media as well as in political circles.

A spokesman for the Danish Conservative Party, Tom Behnke, says he fears there are people who want to convert Denmark into a Muslim country. In an interview with DR News, Behnke said: "I think it is deeply alarming that our integration efforts are so ineffective that the moment there is a Muslim majority, we do away with good-old Danish traditions and introduce Muslim traditions instead. We are living in Denmark, and people have to adapt to the situation that applies here."

When asked whether housing associations with a Muslim minority should sponsor an Eid party, Behnke replied: "We have to remember that in the past, an Eid festival was the Muslims' victory celebration after they had slaughtered the Christians, so I don't know how much there is to celebrate in Denmark. Still, people should be allowed to celebrate whatever festivals they want to, but they also must respect the festivals in the country they have come to."

Behnke added: "There is no point in wanting to convert Denmark into a Muslim country because you yourself have a Muslim background. That must never happen. On the contrary, we must have mutual respect for one another. This is a lack of respect for Danish traditions and culture. We must not have a Denmark where Danish traditions disappear as soon as there is a Muslim majority."

Danish police are now investigating an accusation of racism made against the Muslim board members. In an interview with the Copenhagen Post, police spokesperson Karsten Egtved said: "It needs to be determined to what extent the decision by the Muslim members of the board to first vote 'yes' to a 60,000 kroner Eid party, then 'no' to a 7,000 kroner Christmas tree to celebrate Christian traditions, violates laws by discriminating against Christians and their traditions."

The Christmas tree controversy took an ominous new twist on November 12, when a van carrying two journalists from TV2 News was attacked by 25 masked hoodlums. The journalists had gone to the Egedalsvænget housing complex to film a report about the story, but immediately upon their arrival their van was bombarded with bricks and cobblestones. The attackers destroyed the van and chased the hapless journalists out of the area.

According to TV2, the perpetrators were Muslim youths who were seeking to silence media coverage of the Christmas tree dispute.

Local police have sided with the Muslim attackers by blaming the journalists for sending a television truck into the area in the first place. Dan Houtved of the North Zealand Police told BT News that he would not have gone there had he been a journalist with TV2. "You choose to enter a tense area. One can argue about whether it is wise. I probably would not have done it."

Houtved is referring to the growing number of no-go zones in suburbs of Copenhagen and other Danish cities that are increasingly becoming autonomous enclaves ruled by Muslim youth gangs. They are areas where Danish police fear to tread. (See news video here about how the Danish government is bribing native Danes to get them to live in immigrant neighborhoods.)

In March, for example, more than 140 Muslim gang members raided a courthouse where two fellow Muslims were being tried for attempted murder.

The Muslims -- all members of criminal street gangs that have taken over large parts of Danish towns and cities -- were wearing masks and bullet-proof vests and throwing rocks and bottles as they tried to force their way into the district courthouse in Glostrup, a heavily Islamized suburb of Copenhagen, on March 6.
Police used batons and pepper spray to fend off the gang members, who were armed with an arsenal of 20 different types of weapons, including crowbars, darts, hammers, knives, screwdrivers and wooden clubs.

The trial in Glostrup involved two Pakistani immigrants accused of shooting and attempting to murder two fellow Muslims who belong to a rival gang. The shooting was related to an escalating turf war between rival Muslim gangs from the Værebroparken housing estate in Bagsværd, a suburb of Copenhagen, and Nivå and Kokkedal in northern Zealand. Immigrant gangs are believed to be responsible for at least 50 shootings in and around Copenhagen during 2012.

The immigrant gangs are involved in countless criminal activities, including drug trafficking, illegal weapons smuggling, extortion, human trafficking, robbery, prostitution, automobile theft, racketeering and murder.
Many of the gang members are ethnic Arabs, Bosnians, Turks and Somalians. They also include Iraqis, Moroccans, Palestinians and Pakistanis.

Over the past several years, the immigrant gangs have proliferated geographically across all of Denmark. The gangs have spread south from Copenhagen to the rest of Zealand, from inner Nørrebro, to the suburbs Ishøj, Greve, and on to Køge. The gangs are also active in Albertslund, Herlev, Hillerød, Høje Gladsaxe, Hundige, Roskilde and Skovlunde, among many Danish localities.

Danish authorities estimate that each year more than 700 immigrants between the ages of 18 and 25 are choosing crime as a permanent career by joining gangs such as Black Cobra, the Black Scorpions, the Bandidos, the Bloodz, the International Club, or any other of the more than 100 gangs that are now operating in Denmark.

In August, more than 80 Muslim gang members raided a hospital in Odense, the third-largest city in Denmark, in a failed attempt to kidnap a 26-year-old rival gang member who had previously been shot and stabbed at a shopping center in the Vollsmose district. Hospital police had to use weapons to prevent the angry mob from getting their hands on the shooting victim. An ambulance and four police cars were destroyed in the violence.

More recently, Muslim gangs have been extorting shops and bars in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, threatening local business owners with violence if they refuse to pay protection money for operating in "Muslim territory."

But some non-Muslims have refused to give in to the threats. Consider 67-year-old Jane Pedersen, the courageous owner of the Café Viking, a bar that has been the focus of repeated attacks by Muslim gangs because of her refusal to pay. Pedersen has set up a Facebook page called "No to Bullies, Yes to Beer," which has drawn national and international attention to her plight. (See here for a video produced by the politically correct BBC, which manages to report on Pedersen and Copenhagen's gang problem without once using the word "Muslim".)

In an interview with the Jyllands-Posten newspaper, Pedersen said: "Some guys came in here and told me that I have to pay to be in their area. I refused. I could be their grandmother, and it simply cannot be justified."

There are reportedly some 85 Sharia courts now operating there, with Islamic judges ruling on cases ranging from financial to marital disputes among British Muslims.

"We went into some proceedings and there were a couple of Islamic judges sitting up above the rest," said Alan Craig, who recently stepped down as leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance party. "And there was one Muslim woman who was suing for divorce."

Craig is a former city councilor in East London, home to several Sharia courts where women face open discrimination.

Norway judges free Islamic extremist

The Supreme Court rules there is no reason to hold Arslan Ubaydullah Maroof Hussain in continued custody despite still standing indictments.

Mr Hussain was arrested at the end of last month initially for statements on his Facebook group that left Oslo’s Jewish community feeling threatened.

His remarks resulted in Ola Elvestuen, Oslo city councillor for the Liberal Party (V), calling for talks with police over security at the synagogue.

Police subsequently posted guards outside the Israeli Embassy and the Jewish pre-school near the synagogue just over one week ago in connection with events in the Middle East.

27-year-old Mr Hussain, of Pakistani origin, has been held on remand for four weeks total. He is also indicted for issuing threats against two journalists, as well as threatening an expert witness during trial proceedings.

Today’s verdict quashes Borgarting Court of Appeal’s continued custody ruling. Court of Appeal judges will now have to hear Arslan Ubaydullah Maroof Hussain’s case anew.

However, police have asked for Mr Hussain to remain in custody until this has been effecuated.

London university to host anti-gay extremist Islamic preacher

Brunel University in Uxbridge, west London, has been criticised for allowing a cleric who supports the killing of gay people to attend a student event.

Abu Usamah at-Thahabi is due to make a speech on campus at Brunel’s Islamic Society on Tuesday 27 November.

His extreme views have already been documented in a Channel 4 programme and by the Centre for Social Cohesion.

Thahabi previously urged that gay people should be punished with death.

Nick Clegg: Let’s end ‘abhorrent’ prejudice against Muslims

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was today calling for an end to religious hate crime during a visit to Manchester's Muslim community.

Mr Clegg told the M.E.N he wanted to see acts of hatred against Muslims wiped out – as he pledged to do all he could to put an end to 'abhorrent' prejudicial attacks.

The Liberal Democrat leader was visiting the British Muslim Heritage Centre, in Whalley Range, for a town hall-style summit with local community members and national Islamic organisations.

He was being joined by faith and communities minister Baroness Warsi and Lib Dem communities minister Don Foster.

The group was also visiting the Altrincham Muslim Cultural Centre, which has been the target of religiously-motivated vandalism.

Mr Clegg said: “The reason I'm doing this is because I have for sometime now been very worried about the prejudice, religious hatred and racially motivated violence directed at many Muslims in Manchester and elsewhere. There's absolutely no place for hate crime in modern society. Its an abhorrent thing.”

Mr Clegg was using his visit to announce an extra £214,000 funding for an initiative called Tell Mama (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks) run by interfaith group Faith Matters.

The national organisation will help to inform a cross-government working group set up to tackle the problem and follows work in the Jewish community, by the Community Security Trust, to record anti-Semitic attacks and shape action to prevent them.

The government now wants to get a similar picture of prejudice experienced by Britain's Muslim community.

Mr Clegg said: “The Muslim community is incredibly important for the country.

“This is a national issue but I was very keen to do this in Manchester where its particularly relevant.”

He said interfaith work between the local Muslim, Jewish and Christian communities was particularly important in standing up against intolerance and added: “I will do everything in my power to make sure we take the necessary steps.”

Mr Clegg also spoke to the M.E.N. in support of his party's candidates in next week's Manchester Central by-election and Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

He said: “Clearly we have to fight very hard in every election. I've never denied the fact that we have to fight harder now than we used to because of the controversies now of being in government.”

He said he was an admirer of by-election candidate, former councillor Marc Ramsbottom, and praised his knowledge of Manchester and his dignity in defeat at the local elections in May, when the party suffered heavy losses.

He said: ”He certainly deserves to be the MP for Manchester Central.”

Police launch sex abuse investigation into two East Lancashire children's homes

 A POLICE probe has been launched into claims that gangs of men raped and abused vulnerable under-age girls in care.

Details of the alleged abuse have emerged after a mum in her 20s claimed she was a victim while living in two care homes in East Lancashire as a teenager.

She told police she was groomed and molested in return for alcohol, cigarettes and drugs while away from the homes.

The allegations refer to gangs of Asian men who it is claimed hung around the homes she lived in while under the care of Lancashire County Council.

The victim, who still lives in East Lancashire, also told officers she was abused while being looked after at a home in Merseyside.

She said care workers at that home failed to put a stop to the goings on, echoing the findings of a report into a sex ring in Rochdale, which highlighted ‘missed opportunities’ to halt abuse.

The victim, now a mother-of-four, spoke out to make others aware of the plight of children in the care system.

She is telling her harrowing story in small sections to specially trained officers from Lancashire police’s child exploitation team, Engage.

It comes as child sex abuse cases hit the headlines following hundreds of allegations that broadcaster Jimmy Saville has assaulted young girls.

Statistics show 645 child groomers were identified by Lancashire police between April 2011 and March 2012. Around 96 per cent of those groomers were male and three per cent were female.

In total 77 per cent of groomers were classed as white British, nine per cent were Asian Pakistani and three per cent were Asian Indian.

It is understood, that detectives are now looking into the possibility there may have been other victims.

At just 14-years-old the victim claims she was drugged and gang raped in a field while living at the care home in Merseyside.

She claims she was being denied medical help despite being taken to a police station naked and covered in blood and bruises.

DI Claire Holbrook, head of Lancashire Constabulary’s public protection unit, who is leading the investigation confirmed the allegations centred on East Lancashire.

She said: “Lancashire Constabulary has been made aware of a number of historic allegations and we are in the early stages of investigating those complaints.

“We would always encourage victims to feel confident enough to speak out about abuse they may have suffered and would like to reassure people that we take cases such as this very seriously and they will be investigated with the utmost sensitivity."

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: “Police are investigating these allegations. We are unable to comment further.”

In May this year, members of a sex grooming gang in Rochdale were jailed to a total of 77 years.

They were jailed after being convicted of a racket where under-age victims were groomed for sex and trafficked from the Rochdale area to several address in East Lancashire and beyond.

Girls as young as 13 were first plied with fast food, drink and drugs before they were ‘handed around’ for sex by the men, eight of whom were from Pakistan and one from Afghanistan.

Father fails in court bid to bring children up as Muslims

A FATHER's attempt to get a court to order his children to be brought up in the Muslim faith has failed.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is originally from Egypt but moved to Scotland in 2002 after marrying a Scots woman.

They moved to Fife, had three children – a daughter and twin boys – but split up in 2010.

The man sought an order from Dunfermline Sheriff Court to force the children to be brought up as Muslims. However, Sheriff Ian Dunbar ruled no order should be made, given that the children's mother is Christian and they attend a non-denominational school which celebrates Christian festivals.

In a written judgment on the case, Mr Dunbar said: "The day-to-day circumstances of the children should dictate what is in their best interests.

"I have therefore reached the conclusion that it is not in the best interests of the children that a specific issue order be made that they be brought up in the Muslim faith."

The court heard the children's father gave them Muslim names and whispered the call to prayer into their ears when they were born – an act which he says marks them out as Muslims.

The boys were also circumcised in Edinburgh when they were six months old because of their father's religious beliefs.

Their mother has a Christian background but was not a practising Christian until they separated. At that point, she began to take the children to church and Sunday school.

Mr Dunbar said: "I have no doubt at all that if the parties had children in Egypt they would have been raised as Muslims.

"But the children were born in Scotland and are being raised here with their mother as their primary carer. That is a change of circumstance which has some bearing on what may or may not be in the best interests of the children."

He added: "In this case the children are living in a Christian household with a Christian mother.

"They are at the school which has a Christian overlay because of participation in Christian events such as Christmas and Easter.

"If the children were not to be able to participate in these events or if they were to be made to feel uncomfortable participating in these events because of the views of their father, then I do feel that has potential to mark them out as different from the other children and could potentially cause them some distress."

The sheriff ruled the children should continue being raised with Christian values by their mother and be taught about Islam when they visit their father.

Mona Siddiqui OBE, professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at Edinburgh University, said: "If the children are going to be brought up by the mother, then they should be allowed to do this in terms of peaceful co-existence.

"The issue here isn't what the court has decided, the issue now is how the parents are going to make sure the children don't feel that they're bereft of one side of their identity.

"The court has made a decision where the court has the right to award custody to any parent, which is very different to an Islamic country where much of the time the right of the custody goes to the father, so I think the real problem is not what the court has decided but the responsibility of both parents now to not let their own hostilities deny the children both sides of two very rich cultures."

Switzerland: Pupil Bullied Out of School by Classmates Because he Refused to Convert to Islam

Peter is a quiet, unremarkable school pupil. The sixth year pupil enjoys going to school, but for some time a classmate has been making his life in a Winterthur primary school difficult. This is not a matter of the usual teasing, but is, above, a question of religion. Ali (name changed) wants to convince Peter of his religious ideas and convert him to Islam. The teacher’s attempts to intervene remain without success, resulting in the sensitive Peter showing psychosomatic reactions.

In the 1st class Peter and Ali get on very well. It was not important that 14 of the 19 school pupils had a Muslim background. But later Ali, whose father is a Muslim priest, to give Peter religious instruction. If he was a Muslim, they could be friends, said Ali, whose zeal became ever more marked as time went on.

Ali made fun of Christianity. How is it possible that Jesus is the son of God, asked Ali maliciously. As the class visited a mosque during religious instruction, Ali demanded that Peter now pray to Allah. One day Ali gave his classmates a religious pamphlet of the German convert and hate preacher Pierre Vogel, who is banned from travelling to Switzerland.

Now Peter had the courage to tell the whole class that he wasn’t going to let himself be converted to Islam. Ali’s answer: “You are possessed by the devil”. Afterwards other Muslim classmates also turned away from Peter. The conflict climaxed in two classmates holding Peter while Ali threw ping pong balls at him, continually shouting: “Die!”

Peter suffered ever more often from headaches and stomach pains and developed anxiety disorders. For that reason his mother took him out of the school and taught him herself. As a teacher, she was able to do this.

For several months now, Peter has been receiving therapeutic treatment. His psychiatrist confirms that the psychosomatic symptoms were caused by “fear of classmates”. “Because of the adaptation disorder with anxiety and depressive reactions, Peter is currently seriously impaired in his personal and educational development,” writes the doctor in an expert opinion. “In the last three years similar reactions to school attendance were seen based on conflicts that were mostly caused by the sociocultural differences in Peter’s class.”

…It is undisputed however that, because of immigration and the mixing of cultures, religious topics are being discussed ever more often and can lead to tensions, as various teachers confirmed in interview.

TA is aware of another case in which a Muslim school pupil, whose female classmates wore short skirts and close-fitting T-shirts, delivered an ultimatum to them to dress more modestly.

Dirty Bomb Attack on the UK A ‘Real Threat’

A dirty bomb attack on the UK is a “real threat” and every country has to be vigilant against a nuclear strike, the Foreign Office has warned.

Alistair Burt, who is in charge of counter-terrorism policy, admitted there had been fears of a bomb during this summer’s Olympics.

The threat was considered to be strong enough for nuclear detectors to be deployed for the Games, he said at the start of a two-day summit in London.

The Foreign Office minister said the number of cases involving the loss or theft of nuclear materials around the world was growing.

And he called for countries to show “utmost vigilance” and unite to combat the threat of a nuclear attack.
“Nuclear terrorism is a real and global threat. A successful attack, no matter where in the world it came, would be catastrophic,” he said.

“Catastrophic for the immediate devastation and terrible loss of life, and for the far-reaching consequences – psychological, economic, political and environmental.

“Such an attack was unthinkable just a generation ago. But it is now a possibility we need to confront with the utmost vigilance.”

Figures from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN watchdog, for 1993-2011 show there have been 2,164 cases of nuclear material being “outside state control”.

Of those, 147 occurred in 2011, with four involving the highly enriched uranium needed to build a nuclear bomb.

Mr Burt said the threat meant Britain’s Cyclamen system, used to detect nuclear and radiological materials at ports and airports, was deployed at the Olympics.

“At the Olympic Park, yes, absolutely, processes were deployed… that would trigger the equipment so that we would know something was passing through,” he said.

He also expressed concerns that some governments were helping terrorists acquire nuclear materials or expertise – although he refused to be drawn on the countries involved.

“It wouldn’t be right to identify individual nations who may be engaged in helping or assisting,” he said.
