Mosque tries again to convert building

A MOSQUE in Hayes town has made a renewed bid to remain at its premises.

Hillingdon Borough Central Mosque, which opened in June 2010, has lodged a revised, retrospective application to change the industrial use of its premises in Silverdale Road to allow them to be used as a Muslim community centre and place of worship.

Hayes town has two other mosques – the Hayes Muslim Centre in Pump Lane and the Quba Islamic and Education Centre in Golden Crescent. They serve wahhabi Muslims, as opposed to the majority sunni Muslim community.

A first application for Silverdale Road was refused in April 2011 because of the loss of industrial business area land, and the potential increase in traffic.

The mosque authorities insist the building is ‘ideally located for our catchment area’.
Their success second time around could hinge on whether it can be demonstrated that there is no realistic prospect of the land again being used for industrial purposes.

Before becoming a Muslim centre, the unit had been empty since April 2008, and no offers from commercial firms had been made for it.

Hillingdon Council is due to determine the application by the end of October.

Nobody from the mosque was available for comment.
