MP concerned about racial tension in city

 RISING immigration has created 'tensions' in the Potteries, according to a city MP.

Labour's Tristram Hunt, who represents Stoke-on-Trent Central, was speaking after his leader Ed Miliband said the party must face up to its 'past mistakes' on immigration.

The party wants to create better integration with a bigger emphasis on speaking English.

Mr Hunt said his leader is having to walk a fine line to resolve community anxieties about changing demographics with the need to celebrate Britain's diversity.

He added: "What he is trying to do is marry the brilliance of Britain which we saw during the Olympics with the kind of tensions we have seen in cities like the one I represent."

The British National Party had nine city council seats in 2008/09 and was briefly the second biggest group in the council chamber, earning Stoke-on-Trent the dubious title as the far right party's 'jewel in the crown' from national party chairman Nick Griffin MEP.
