Labour leader Ed Miliband has slammed the English Defence League as ‘abhorrent’ and warned they are not welcome in Manchester.
Ahead of the far right group’s city centre rally this afternoon, Mr Miliband backed a call from leading local Labour figures to ignore it.
And he said ‘desperate’ Manchester voters will not turn to the far right at the next election instead realising Labour, not extremists, had the answers.
Much of the city centre will be shut to traffic during Saturday's mass demonstration.
Mr Miliband said residents must ‘turn their backs’ on the protest, echoing a letter in Thursday’s M.E.N. signed by police commissioner Tony Lloyd and Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell.
