53-year-old attacked in an early- evening attack in the city centre.

Police are hunting a man who punched a 53-year-old in an early- evening attack in the city centre.

The incident happened on the night the Christmas lights were turned on in Leicester, Sunday, November 18.

The victim was approached by a man in the street, near the junction with Horsefair Street, at about 6pm. The man hit the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground, before walking away towards the Clock Tower.

The victim was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment to a head injury.

He was discharged several days later.

The suspect is Asian, aged between 25 and 30, with black hair. He was wearing a dark suit.

Pc Ivor Messiah said: "The assault took place on the same night the Christmas lights were switched on in Leicester, which means there would have been hundreds of people in the city that night. The victim was in hospital for a number of days following the assault.

"A number of people helped the victim after the incident and we would appeal to anyone who hasn't yet spoken to the police to do so.

"If you attended the light switch- on ceremony and witnessed the assault, or the events leading up to it, please contact us."
