State Syrian TV announced that an "armed terrorist group" had abducted
two Christian clerics as they carried out “humanitarian work in Aleppo
countryside”. A member of the official opposition leadership confirmed
the kidnapping.
Two Christian senior bishops have been abducted by militants in a rebel-held area near Aleppo. Yohanna Ibrahim is head of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Aleppo and Boulos Yaziji leads the Greek Orthodox Church in the city. According to the BBC, Abdulahad Steifo, a Syriac member of the opposition Syrian National Coalition, said that the clerics had been abducted on the road to Aleppo from the rebel-held Bab al-Hawa crossing, which is close to the Turkish town of Reyhanli. The AFP news agency reports that the militants had killed the bishops’ driver.
