Kris Hopkins opposes Sharia law plan

“I have already written to Chris Grayling, the Justice Secretary, to say that I’m completely opposed to the Government funding another judicial system in this country.”

The Government will today being urged to rule out any sponsoring of Sharia courts, following controversy over talks in Bradford.

Keighley Tory MP Kris Hopkins will stage a Commons debate to put ministers on the spot over the future of courts that follow Islamic religious law. The Bradford Council for Mosques is in talks to start up a Sharia panel that would offer advice and deal with legal issues in the Muslim community.

It has called for Sharia councils to be better resourced and recognised by the Government. In February, a judge agreed to refer a divorce dispute to a religious court. Now Mr Hopkins will seek Government guarantees, as well as attempting to trigger a wider debate about Sharia law.
